A 2,700-year-old solar eclipse just revealed something surprising about Earth

A solar eclipse recorded more than 2,700 years ago is revealing surprising secrets about Earth's rotation and the Sun's ancient behavior. By correcting an eight-kilometer error in the location of an ancient Chinese capital, scientists were able to reconstruct a total solar eclipse that occurred in 709 BCE and obtain more accurate measurements of how fast Earth was spinning at the time.

How Voting Is Like a Klein Bottle

A new topological model connects a centuries-old voting paradox to a surface with no distinct inside or outside. The post How Voting Is Like a Klein Bottle first appeared on Quanta Magazine

NASA’s Perseverance Views Dust at Neretva Vallis

Description This 360-degree look at Neretva Vallis within Mars’ Jezero Crater was stitched together using 217 images acquired by the rover’s Mastcam-Z on May 20, 2024, the 1,155th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. While it is a wind-swept dusty vista today, billions of years ago it was home to a river channel that fed fresh water into […]

A note on the monotonicity of observational ergotropic advantage

arXiv:2610.32585v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Very recently, Mahanti et al. (arXiv:2609.18735) introduced the observational ergotropic advantage, which gives the maximum value of extra work that a measurement can obtain with respect to all incoherent measurements. However, the above quantity does not show monotonic behaviour under the resource theory of measurement coherence.

Classical Pre-Training of Large Shallow Parametrized Quantum Circuits through Pauli Propagation and deployment on Quantum Hardware

arXiv:2610.32571v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Scaling parametrized quantum circuits to a larger number of qubits is a central challenge in Quantum Machine Learning: gradient estimation via the parameter-shift rule quickly becomes prohibitively expensive, while gradient-free optimizers offer limited convergence guarantees.

LYNX - A trapped-ion quantum information processor

arXiv:2610.32518v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We introduce LYNX, a quantum information processor based on trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions. It utilizes up to 31 qubits with all-to-all connectivity. We characterize the system performance using rigorous benchmarks, such as randomized benchmarking (RB), GHZ state fidelity estimates, and quantum volume (QV) tests.

Quantum Secret Sharing from CSS qLDPC Codes: Computable Access Structures, Accessible Logical Dimension, and Topology-Aware Network Cost

arXiv:2610.32428v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Quantum secret sharing (QSS) schemes can be constructed from quantum error-correcting codes, but characterizing their access structures and implementation costs becomes challenging for finite-length, high-rate quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes. We develop an exact computational framework for QSS induced by CSS qLDPC codes.

Entangled logical qubits on a superconducting quantum processor

arXiv:2610.32347v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We demonstrate high-fidelity logical qubit operations using \texttt{ibm\_phoenix}, a square-lattice array of 120 coupled superconducting qubits that are capable of fast reset. Using strategies to exclude underperforming components together with noise informed decoding, we routinely produce surface codes at distance-3 and distance-5 with logical error per round below…

Finite Nonsignalling Resources Suffice to Simulate Entangled Qubits

arXiv:2610.32319v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: A longstanding question in Bell nonlocality is whether finite-alphabet nonsignalling resources can reproduce the continuum of measurement correlations of partially entangled qubits. Here we resolve this problem by showing that every fixed pure two-qubit state admits an exact simulation of all local projective-measurement statistics using shared randomness and finitely…

Near-field maps of topological edge states of molecular aggregates

arXiv:2610.32287v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Self-assembled two-dimensional molecular aggregates provide a versatile platform for engineering excitonic states, including topologically nontrivial edge states. However, these edge-states are difficult to probe optically: they have weak far-field transition strengths, and far-field spectra do not reveal whether an excitation is localized at the edge.

Two-Layer Verification for Fault-Tolerant Magic-State Preparation in High-Rate Quantum Codes

arXiv:2610.32267v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Encoded magic states are essential for universal fault-tolerant quantum computation, but their resource-efficient preparation in high-rate quantum codes remains challenging. To address this limitation, we propose two-layer verification, which combines local verification of independently prepared subblocks with logical verification after their embedding into a target…

Performing a Quantum Subroutine Using Cluster States

arXiv:2610.32227v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Quantum subroutines, like their classical counterparts, serve as essential components of larger algorithms. They can be realized using gate based architectures or measurement based quantum computation (MBQC), where computation proceeds through adaptive measurements on highly entangled cluster states.

Bogoliubov Dynamics and Zitterbewegung in Optical Dirac Systems

arXiv:2610.32209v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We develop a bosonic Bogoliubov description of Zitterbewegung in time-dependent optical-Dirac systems. Within the optical-Dirac framework, the anomalous pair-creation and pair-annihilation terms of a bosonic Bogoliubov Hamiltonian correspond to couplings between the positive- and negative-frequency sectors, whose coherence underlies the Zitterbewegung response.

Two \SI{10}{\um}-long devices with widths of \SI{3.2}{\um} and \SI{6.4}{\um} are characterized under pulsed \SI{515}{nm} excitation.

Trident: Efficient Load Verification for Yoked Surface Codes using a Three-Level Memory Hierarchy

arXiv:2610.32152v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computers (FTQCs) commonly use the surface code to encode program qubits as error-corrected logical qubits. Unfortunately, the surface code has a poor encoding rate, so recent work has proposed Yoked Surface Codes (YSCs), which concatenate the surface code with a high-rate quantum code.

Quantum Cryptomania with Classical Communication without One-Way Functions

arXiv:2610.32145v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In classical cryptography, one-way functions are necessary for most of cryptography. In the quantum world, however, Kretschmer at {TQC'21} and subsequent works have demonstrated that quantum versions of various primitives in minicrypt, such as signatures and private-key encryption, do not require quantum-computable one-way functions (\textsf{qOWF}s).
